Imagine Sliding Across Ice With Bare Skin... What's Happens?
Coming into contact with something extremely cold, such as ice, can damage the skin tissue and cause ice burn. So, what exactly does sliding across snow and ice do to the base of your skis/ snowboard?
If you didn't already know, the base material of ski or snowboard is made of an high-molecular-weight polyethylene, commonly referred to as 'P-Tex'. This reason this type of polyethylene is used is due to its low moisture absorption, low friction coefficient and - most importantly for you - it has tiny pores that accept wax, allowing for improved glide across snow and ice.
Problems arise when this wax dries out from you ski/ snowboard base, exactly what tends to happen in storage over the summer months or after multiple trips.
Wax is key to reducing the friction between the base material of your skis / snowboard and the snow and ice. Friction caused by snow and ice is one of the most complex forces that acts on a skier or snowboarders and can vary substantially due to changes in snow conditions, snow-surface temperature, load and speed, wax hardness, snow roughness and meltwater lubrication.
One of the main reasons some people struggle on the flats, whilst others glide effortlessly past:
Friction, that occurs because of old, dried out wax!
Ski-snow friction is also one of the main causes of wear and oxidation of your base materials. This is another reasons why it's important the base materials are coated with wax, to protect your skis/snowboard surface. Less friction leads to increased speed and efficiency across snow and ice, leading to more enjoyable and effortless gliding across the flats, allowing you to ski for longer with less fatigue.
Another essential part of your ski or snowboard equipment is the steel edges which play a vital part in conquering the mountain.
Rusty, dull, rounded edges can make skiing very challenging when attempting to turn, carve and stop. Finely tuned edges on the other hand help improve your skis' ability to hold an edge, enhancing overall stability whether you're carving precise turns, making quick stops or navigating challenging icy slopes.
In summary, well maintained skis and snowboards perform better on the slopes and respond predictably to your movements, providing better control and reducing the risk of accidents, increasing both performance and safety of your equipment for better edge grip and responsiveness whilst also extending the lifespan of your skis or snowboard by preventing damage to the base, edges, bindings and thus reduce the need for costly repairs or replacements.
A worthwhile investment that enhances your ski experience and helps get the most out of your equipment.
What Service Do You Need & When?
You've just come back from a weeks skiing, or two, or three and you're getting ready to go again:
The edges are still looking good, there might be a few scratches requiring a little Ptex or a fresh Wax to get the most out of the energy you're putting in.
You've bought a set of skis or snowboard. Congratulations!
New equipment comes with a factory wax that 'should' last a week. One thing to note: If it's not this years model then your equipment has been in storage for quite some time and could definitely benefit from a fresh wax.
You've just bought a second hand pair or skis or snowboard:
You're not exactly sure what it needs. Simply drop it in, we can take a look and provide a bespoke recommendation to suit your needs. If you've bought a second hand pair of skis, your bindings will also need a few adjustments to fit your boots and your ski profile.
The season or your season has come to end and it's time to put the gear back into storage... but wait!
Before you pack your gear away for a year, now is the PERFECT window of opportunity to get a good layer of storage wax on and prevent oxidation over the hot summer months and increase the lifespan of your equipment. It's also essential you remove any moisture from your equipment bags and storage area to prevent rust from forming . I personally also apply a bit of Vaseline to the rails helping minimise further rust formation.

Everything Included In The Yearly Foundation Service:
- A Base Clean: First we remove old wax from the porous base which will slow you down and depreciate the base of the board as it becomes oxidised.
- Edge & Base Tuning: We go two steps beyond the call to action to ensure your rails are in pristine condition. .
- Edge Filing: We remove any signs of rust from your rails and set the true angle using a selection of files and professional file guides. We typically tune the base edges to an angle of 1° and sharpen side edge to 89°.
- Fresh Wax: We typically use a Holmenkol wax for the base and professional waxing irons which do not cause damage unlike normal irons. Wax is then allowed to cool before the excess is scraped away.
- Base Structure: we structure the base by hand using a selection of tools and brushes which create channeled grooves in the base from tip to tail.
- Deburring: This essential part of the process helps prevent you from catching a rail, increase your carve initiation and exit your turns much smoother.
- Finishing Polish: We use a selection of graded diamond files for an high quality, finely tuned finish.
Optional extras
Base Repairs - Ski and snowboard base damage, like scratches or gouges, should be repaired with P-Tex and Metal Grip to prevent further issues, saving you from costlier future repairs..
A Hot Wax - Regular hot waxing is essential for ski and snowboard maintenance, providing cost-effective benefits such as improved glide, speed, and equipment longevity, especially on flatter terrain and in challenging snow conditions. It's like giving your gear a fresh start. Top-sheet + Sidewall Repairs - We use a high grade epoxy to fill any chips or sections peeling away that expose the core of the board which is why it's always worth checking your equipment for signs of damage. Storage Wax - Protect the base from oxidizing whilst in storage with a layer of wax applied after your trip. |
